The "Minlaton Pioneers" web site and the Committee acknowledge the Adjahdura people are the original inhabitants and traditional owners of all the Yorke Peninsula lands.
The objective of the Committee for the immediate future is to establish a Pioneer Wall in the garden next to the Harry Butler memorial in Minlaton. The wall will carry brass plaques commemorating the original inhabitants, the old pioneering families and founding organizations, businesses, groups and individuals with deep connections to the history of the region. A feature of the additions to the garden will be the inclusion of a life size bronze statue of Captain Harry Butler in his flying outfit.
The Committee hopes to achieve this target in time for the 100th anniversary commemoration of Captain Harry Butler's return to Minlaton following World War I.
In the longer term, the Committee will entrust the care of the memorial garden to future generations and entrust the long term keeping of the local history to the community.
"Minlaton Pioneers" will publish news of the project as it unfolds. Additionally it will provide an interesting collage of historical material including personal anecdotes from some of the YP 'old timers'. As the collection grows it will provide copies of letters, photographs and maps of interest gathered over the years. Although the focus will be on the pioneering people, naturally regional geographical information will be included as the pioneers developed the local economy. Fishing, mining, broad acre cropping and grazing, land improvement and local industry will all get a mention. Local schools, churches, and friendly societies and social clubs among others will also feature.
We propose to highlight some of the earliest families, famous individuals. milestone events, important sites of historical interest and provide some good guidance on visiting the Yorke Peninsula today.
This is an interactive site where you can leave comments and ask questions or submit material for inclusion. If you have a link or an allegiance to the Yorke Peninsula you too are therefore a part of the greater Yorke Peninsula community - even if you don't live there. This makes you a stake-holder in this web site. We hope you will contribute your little bit to the Minlaton Pioneers story.
